It is absolutely essential your baby or child is kept safe in the sun, and Sharksuit makes it easy and fun.

Depending on where you live, shopping for sun protective clothing NOW may seem a little late in the season. But, if you time it right, you can actually save serious money on spf clothing that will, FOR SURE, be useful next summer. And the timing is NOW!

The investment of buying ahead isn’t the only saving! I’ve saved so much money on sunblock since we’ve gotten our fun Sharksuits too. And I know you can relate, applying clothing to a toddler is MUCH EASIER than applying sunscreen!!! Read the rest of this entry »

Well, Homemade Baby’s food does not come in a jar. It is much too fresh to be sitting on a shelf. It is sold in the refrigerated section of health-conscious, health-food stores, and comes in 100% recyclable, safe containers. Read the rest of this entry »

August 4th, 2008 admin Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Car, Car Seats, Petition No Comments »

HealthyCar.org has just released the 2nd annual consumer guide to toxic chemicals in cars (and child, baby, and infant car seats), complete with the newest test results for over 200 of the most popular 2008 and 2009 model vehicles and over 60 child car seats.

As an added bonus, this year’s rankings are cross-referenced with fuel economy figures, allowing consumers to find both healthy and fuel-efficient vehicles.

This is great information for parents! We spend so much accumulated time in vehicles with our children, and many cars release toxins that are linked to birth defects, cancer, and learning disabilities. The videos below wonderfully show what toxins hide where, how they affect our health, and what you can do to find the healthiest car in the future. Read the rest of this entry »

Celebrate Breastfeeding Week With Us and WIN Our Give Away!

August 1st, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, Bonding, Breastfeeding, Petition 6 Comments »

In conjunction with the Olympics, World Breastfeeding Week 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond.

As every country sends its best athletes to compete at these global games, it is important to remind ourselves that, in a similar fashion, a healthy young athlete can only emerge from a healthy start on life. There is no question that optimal infant and young child feeding is essential for optimal growth and development. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Bamboo Clothing for Baby Natural and Chemical Free?

July 25th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, Clothing, Product Reviews 2 Comments »

Another safe alternative to conventional cotton is bamboo.

We’ve heard about the toxic process of bamboo from plant to fiber which can be harmful on the environment. So, we searched for a company that offered a safer, non-toxic processing alternative.

We were impressed with Bamboosa’s integrity and had to rave about their baby soft gift set. Bamboosa chooses to not use bleach on their fabrics and many of their purely natural products are without any dye at all. Read the rest of this entry »

Anti-bacterials hiding in everyday products are toxic to our children!

July 19th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies, Skin Care No Comments »

After participating in on a Q&A hosted by the Environmental Working Group , SafBaby is happy to bring you a little more insight on the dangers of “anti-bacterial” products . The questions were answered by Staff Scientist Rebecca Sutton, who also holds a Ph.D in Environmental Chemistry.

Anti-bacterial agents are most commonly, but far from exclusively, found in hand soaps. “But isn’t that a good thing,” one may question? I mean, who wants harmful bacteria hiding on our children and baby’s hands anyway? Isn’t this the best option in hand soap for my family to keep germs at bay? The following insight may surprise you, even if you thought you knew all the answers. Read the rest of this entry »

Kinderware Bear YoYo Doll

It was love at first touch for me! Having this natural doll in my hands feels really good. Not to mention: what a great safe alternative to those toxic stuffed animals that typically end up in our landfills.

Numerous pieces of brightly colored and patterned leftover fabrics are sewn together in rings attached to a fun animal head (choose from bear, bunny, elephant or puppy doll).

The textures that come from the folded and layered limbs are so uniques and wonderful.

We also love that the cutest cuddle toys have been lovingly crafted from scraps that would otherwise be unwanted additions to our landfills. Read the rest of this entry »

Toxins Released from PVC Shower Curtains, Go PVC-Free!

June 30th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, indoor air pollution 5 Comments »

PVC Vinyl Shower Curtains are toxicWhen I read the recent 44 page report on the dangers of the indoor air pollution that PVC shower curtains cause, I was alarmed! Included in this report is a 3.5 page listing of volatile organic compounds released from PVC shower curtains, almost all of the compounds identified have a real chemical/toxic sounding name.

Not only that, but I was also shocked to read how the authors recommended PVC shower curtains be disposed of. “PVC should be treated as a hazardous material. As an interim measure, PVC could be disposed of in “secure” triple-lined hazardous waste landfills.” Read the rest of this entry »

Milk Money: The Business of Formula

May 14th, 2008 admin Posted in 0-1 yr, Breastfeeding, Drinking, Feeding, News, Product Reviews No Comments »

Baby FormulaWhen I left the hospital after having my baby I left with a free diaper bag full of formula samples, bottles, coupons, and even a little formula-promoting cooler to keep my formula filled bottles in.

I had already joyously made the decision that I was going to breast feed my baby and didn’t really think much about the “gifts” I was leaving home with. Now, the more I learn about this “business”, the more I am heart-broken about how mothers are being mislead and baby’s health taking second priority, all for the benefit of infant formula corporations. Well, I can tell you that we have probably tried every option when it comes to disposable diapers. Of all the options out there (when it comes to a disposable anyways), Seventh Generation’s Disposable Diapers are my pick.

What I like about Seventh Generation disposable diapers:

  1. They are chlorine-free! This means no dioxin! A toxic chemical released in the making of the diaper, and also found in trace amounts in the diaper too. Read the rest of this entry »

Milk: Does It Really Do a Body Good?

April 10th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Food Intolerance 1 Comment »

Milk Being sensitive to dairy, as many people are, I grew up with a lot of intestinal problems. My mother thought, as many still do now, that milk was good for me. In fact, many parents and grandparents today believe milk to practically be a necessity for their growing children. But plenty of studies show that this is not the case!

But how can this be?…..

We have all certainly been fed to believe that milk is good for all of us. We have all seen the effective marketing ads and we all the know the phrase, “Milk, it does a body good.” (Can’t you see the cow’s milk mustache just by hearing the strategically advertised statement?) But a closer, scientific look at how milk may truthfully be effecting your baby’s health is important for all parents to know. Read the rest of this entry »

Organic Cotton One Piece Amercian Apparel

Is it sometimes hard for you too? To give up some of those itsy bitsy outfits that your baby grows out of?

Now I am thinking that it is a wonderful thing for another baby to be able to recycle (re-use and reduce) her cute threads too! Most of my baby girl’s clothing is made from cotton. When you think of baby clothing, cotton probably comes to mind as the best natural fabric option. But, is this really the case? Well, it breathes, it is soft and comfortable, and it even absorbs (as cotton diapers do). Probably the first onesie you put on your little angel was cotton, and he/she may even be wearing cotton clothing right now.

However, according to the Sustainable Cotton Project in California, about 1/3 of a pound of chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, processing chemicals and dyes) are used to make just ONE cotton t-shirt! Read the rest of this entry »
