Helping To Make Safe Toy Shopping Easier This Christmas

November 17th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Allergies, BPA-Free, Drinking, Feeding, Fire retardants, Holiday Safety, Natural Remedies, PVC-free, Product Recalls, Toys 2 Comments »

“I’m writing about the challenge of finding safe toys for Christmas. Have you found it’s any easier to find safe toys, now that Congress passed the CPSC law? It doesn’t take effect until February, so I’m wondering if parents can shop with confidence, or if they still have to be careful, checking out each individual toy?”

Wow! These important questions such as these have been coming, and we are happy to address this perfect topic with all of our SafBaby readers.

Toys won’t be safer this Christmas than they were last Christmas, SafBaby believes. This new regulation (starting Feb. 10, 2009) doesn’t mean all toys, as midnight strikes, will suddenly be safe either. They will eventually be safer, but it is very important and wise to know what to look for in finding safer alternatives that are still playfully fun and appealing to our children. What Do All The Marks and Symbols On Toy Packages Mean?

November 17th, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Toys 2 Comments »

Toy safety symbols are located on the packaging of our babies and children’s toys, and sometimes on the toy as well. Have you ever wondered what they mean?

We have! So we have done some research to define these symbols and believe that knowing a little bit about these standards will help you make wiser toy purchases.

The more safety symbols the toy has, the easier it is for a consumer to trust in the safety of it’s product! Especially if you see voluntary symbols like the Lion or SGS GS, TÜV, RoHS, FSC and more.

If you visit your local toy store such as Toys R Us, Babies R Us, or Target, you will need to dig for toys that have one or more certifications. We know, we have gone to these stores searching for them. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Our Children Need Supplements & Natural Immune Boosting Support

November 11th, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Allergies, Development, Feeding, Indoor air pollution, Natural Remedies, Product Reviews, Vaccines 4 Comments »

Ever since my daughter started eating solids, I wondered if a supplement was necessary. If so, what do I look for? Can they really boost her immune system and keep her healthy? Are they overkill and a waste of money if she is eating healthy foods?

All of these questions and so many different products to choose from. There is an overwhelming selection of vitamins, minerals, and immune boosting support supplements on the market. So, I decided to ask my pediatrician for her recommendation. She suggested Childlife® Essentials Vitamins and also added that it was one of the best supplement companies on the market.

Then we read the survey done by the FDA that found elevated levels of lead in many supplements available for children, and we really wanted to dig deeper. Read the rest of this entry »

A Safe Alternative, Non-toxic Nail Polish For Kids

November 8th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Product Reviews 2 Comments »

Finding a safe, non-toxic nail polish is important if you are going to introduce this cosmetic to your child.

Most nail polishes contain harmful ingredients such as: formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone. So finding a safer alternative is a smart choice!

Now that my daughter has gotten her piggy’s painted, she is a little addicted to it. She even wants to paint daddy’s toenails! It hasn’t gone that far yet, but for our toddler, “pink fingernails” and “pink piggies” are becoming a common color scheme around our here.

Thank goodness for Piggy Paint™, my little one can enjoy her colorful nails and I keep peace of mind that we are making a safe alternative nail polish choice. Read the rest of this entry »

You may know that GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, but the whole story behind this science is nothing less than SHOCKING.

The video below, which digs deeply into the roots and reasoning behind GMO, was so overwhelming to us, we had to find out if all of this was true. So, we went looking for answers. We wanted to know how GMOs are affecting our children and their future.

We asked the expert Jeffrey Smith, a leading spokesperson on the health dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), the questions parents want answers to. Read the rest of this entry »

October 25th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Clothing, Product Recalls 5 Comments »

If you have a baby that sleeps in Carter’s, Cisco, or Gerber tagless clothing (or know anyone that may), you must read this! ZRecommends was recently investigating the chemical burns (possibly from the dangerous chemical, phthalates), which is in the tagless ink concoction.

On October 24, CPSC and Carter’s released an official statement advising parents of rashes associated with heat transferred, or “Tag-less” labels. Read the rest of this entry »

Organic, Chemical-free Sunscreen That You’ll Use Year Round

October 23rd, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Product Reviews, Sun Protection 5 Comments »

Having an organic and chemical free sunscreen on hand, even in the fall and winter is important if you enjoy the outdoors like we do.

UVA and UVB sunrays travel directly to the earth, regardless of the weather.  We absorb these rays, but our babies absorb them much faster because their skin is so thin and sensitive.  Things like sand and snow actually reflect these dangerous rays too.  Reflective rays are powerful, and snow can reflect dangerous sun rays up to 88%!

Protecting our babies from reflective rays is best done with a safe, chemical free sunscreen! Read the rest of this entry »

Even though most manufacturer claim that PVC/Vinyl without phthalates is not harmful, many experts question it’s safety. Read the rest of this entry »

Enjoy Your Eco-fabulous Party with Bambu Bamboo!

October 13th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Environment, Feeding, Product Reviews No Comments »

We used these adorable bamboo disposable plates for my little girl’s second birthday party. What a eco-fabulous way to party in style, along with having the convenience of no clean-up! Nothing like giving a party AND enjoying it too. With Bamdino Bamboo Plates, I was able to do just that!

Along side of the Bamdino Plates, we also used the Bambu Baby and Kids Utensils as a natural non-plastic alternative.

The new Kids Spork double times its duties, and was a fun way to celebrate and eat our fruit salad with too! The sporks were also then taken home by each child to enjoy time and time again. The coolest thing with these, when they out grow them, they can still be used for play with their kitchen and tea sets. Read the rest of this entry »

We recently interviewed Carol S. Kopf, Media Officer for the Fluoride Action Network (FAN), to get answers to the questions parents, and us at SafBaby, are most concerned about!

Safbaby:
What kind of fluoride is being used to fluoridate drinking water?

Carol Kopf:
Silicofluorides

Safbaby:
What are silicofluorides?

Carol Kopf:
Silicofluorides
are waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry which are dumped, unpurified, into drinking water and allowed (by NSF International-the regulatory body over water additives) to have trace amounts of lead, arsenic, mercury and other toxins present. Read the rest of this entry »

Are We Poisoning Our Babies And Children With Fluoride?

October 1st, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Fluoride 3 Comments »

The fluoride controversy makes us wonder who truly benefits from pouring this hazardous waste into our drinking supply!

Living in one of those states which has plenty of fluoride in our water, we feel the frustration of being “medicated” without our consent, and felt this to be a great topic. Especially since over fluoridating our babies and toddlers can lead to unnecessary health concerns and/or dangers.

Government Asks Flu Shots For ALL Children

September 24th, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Vaccines No Comments »

I just heard today that the government health officials are recommending flu shots for ALL children age 6 months to 18 years old for this coming flu season. Prior to now, the influenza vaccine shot was recommended for children under 5.

The flu vaccine may (and again, maybe NOT) help you from getting the flu. But we must also not loose sight that these vaccines are full of toxic additives and preservatives such as mercury and aluminum. Added to the other recommended vaccines that are to go into our babies yearly, these neurotoxins are accumulating rapidly in their vulnerable and growing systems. Read the rest of this entry »

Paraben and Sulfate-free Bubble Bath for Baby and Toddler

September 21st, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Product Reviews, Skin care No Comments »

Although I LOVE a good bubble bath, I haven’t really enjoyed one since I became increasingly aware of what makes up the ingredients of most bubble bath products (sodium laurel sulfates, synthetic fragrances and artificial colors). Not very relaxing once you become aware that you are a steeping body in a tub full of potentially harmful chemicals. Kind of robs the moment.

My baby girl had never experienced a lathery, sudsy bubble bath…….. not until we found Little Twig! And that first bubble bath with her made me smile from ear to ear. Read the rest of this entry »

Are Food Certification Labels Misleading?

September 19th, 2008 safbaby Posted in 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies, Skin care, Toys No Comments »

They sure are! Especially when it comes to meat, fish and dairy products. Organic, certified-organic, GMO-Free, cage-free, free-range, fair trade and even more labels can be confusing and misleading to consumers.

After not knowing what many of these meant ourselves, SafBaby did some research to find out. What we learned was definitely interesting, so we wanted to share it with you.

It’s not surprising to see the matter in which some labels are used, simply to attract uninformed consumers. For example, “cage-free” doesn’t depict  what you imagine in your head it should mean.

Non-toxic, Formaldehyde-Free, Eco-Friendly Wooden Play Kitchen

September 14th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Play, Product Reviews, Toys 1 Comment »

The first time that my baby girl played with a wooden Kitchen Play Center was in a toy store. She just loved it and it kept her engaged in imaginative play for quite some time. This was when I realized how wonderful a Play Kitchen really is for a child’s imagination and creative play time.

Unfortunately, many toy kitchens are made of plywood, containing formaldehyde and toxic paints. On top of that, glues used to press woods such as plywood and particleboard together, give off additional toxic fumes.

Formaldehyde and other toxic glues are widely used in wooden play kitchens and other wooden toys. In small amounts, this toxic chemical can irritate your child’s eyes, skin and throat, and it can cause nausea and lethargy. In high concentrations and through long-term exposure, formaldehyde is a deadly carcinogenic substance.

That’s why we were looking for one of the safest, environmental-friendliest and highest quality kitchens available……. and SafBaby happily found this one! Read the rest of this entry »
