Non-toxic Sand Toys by Green Toys are Eco-Friendly and Fun

By |April 14, 2009 |

Our very popular and informative post titled “How Dangerous Is PVC in Toys? We’ve Got The Answers From THE Expert” clearly lays out the dangers of PVC in our children’s toys.

One of the types of toys out there that is not easy to find as PVC-free has been sand toys.  And since Spring has sprung and Summer time is right around the corner, beach days and countless hours of fun are waiting to be had playing in the sand!

I was immediately impressed by the quality of Green Toys™ Sand Play Set made from 100% recycled milk jugs.  They are sturdy, with a plastic much thicker than my girl’s other sand toys.  These toys are truly made to last!

Green Toys Sand Play set comes with a bucket, a sand castle mold, a shovel and a rake.  All of which are PBA-Free, phthalates free, and free of lead paints too!

SPF Swim Wear and Sports Wear for Babies, Toddlers and Kids

By |April 5, 2009 |

Simply put, I have not seen a single piece from the Snapper Rock UV50 Collection that I do not absolutely love!  We are not left surprised that Snapper Rock Swim Wear is sold only in the finest boutiques and stores around the world.  (But no worries, we have their link below!)

We live on an island and 96% of all of the little girls/toddlers I see on the beach  are wearing itsy bitsy, tiny weenie, cute-as-can-be bikinis.

There is no denying that they are cute, but I am always left thinking to myself how happy I am that I have the ability to greatly reduce my baby’s overall harmful sun exposure right now, while she is so young.

“Why not let her keep her precious and flawless skin as long as I can?” I think.

Well, thanks to Snapper Rock, my little one is looking incredibly stylish, outrageously adorable and can endlessly play in the outdoors without harming her new and beautiful skin.

Furthermore, she LOVES to wear her Snapper Rock wear when we are at the beach, the park, or playing in the yard.  I was astonished at how fast my little girl’s swim shorts dried after playing in the river and ocean.  The material is amazing.  Oh yeah, my daughter just loves that her swim shorts HAVE POCKETS!  She thinks that is the coolest.

We SAFbaby mama’s think the safe UV50 factor is pretty cool! […]

A Natural and Effective DEET-Free Bug Spray

By |April 2, 2009 |

If a long winter has kept you indoors, or if a warm-weathered Spring Break is in your future, then you and your family are eager to get into the wild outdoors!  Living here in Hawaii, we are outdoors daily, and so are those darn mosquitoes.

And boy do those pesky biters like new blood!  When we moved here, my daughter was especially tasty to seemingly every mosquito within miles of her 2 year old blood.

The dangers of deet, especially for our babies and children, are highly toxic.  So, I had to find a safer, more natural alternative.

Let me tell you, my whole family was happy when I found Second Skin Naturals™.  My little one was actually in the habit of asking for it whenever she started getting bit too.  (Which was often while we were loading up in the car.)  And daddy’s work out in the banana patches and with other yard work has been more enjoyable too.

What you need to know about deet, especially if you are a parent is this…. […]

Hand Sanitizer that Kills 99.9% Germs Without Toxic Synthetic Chemicals

By |March 31, 2009 |

In the US, we are obsessed with germ killers more than anywhere else in the world!
Anti-bacterial products are every where from shoes, tooth brushes, toys, bibs, cutting boards, shower mats, wash gels to hand sanitizers.
They’re usually labeled as with words like:  antibacterial, fights germs, protection against mold, and odor-fighting.
What are the concerns with most common anti-bacterial products? Well, the first big one for us here at SafBaby is that the most common ones available in our mainstream marketplace kill ALL the bacteria on our skin. Not all bacterias are bad, and we need the good stuff to stay healthy too.
The overuse of anti-bacterial soaps, sprays, gels and so on has contributed to helping harmful bacteria become somewhat immune to their use. So, overuse of harsh anti-bacterial products are doing more harm then good over the long haul.
A U.S. FDA advisory committee has found that household use of antibacterial products provides no benefits over plain soap and water, and the American Medical Association recommends that triclosan, an antibacterial chemical and pesticide, not be used in the home, as it may encourage bacterial resistance to antibiotics.¹

Natural Mat’s Organic Cotton and Natural Latex Mattress: The Coco Mat

By |March 27, 2009 |

Natural Mat is a respectable mattress company that passes strict US Fire Retardants standards without any use of toxic fire retardants. Right on!  This is not easy to find.  (Please beware of the “organic” label on mattresses unless you really know what you are looking for.)

Natural Mat is truly a safe, non-toxic, chemical-free crib mattress that we recommend. Natural Mat uses natural latex, cruelty-free wool and organic cotton in their mattresses.  However, their Coco Mat is latex free.

‘Natural Latex’ was a topic we were feeling quite confused with, so  Natural Mat helped clarify with us how their “natural” process works since they do use natural latex in their more expensive line of organic mattresses.  Also, we cover the subject of potential allergies, and other important concerns in our exclusive interview below!

Non-toxic Crib Mattress: Organic doesn’t mean safer!

By |March 25, 2009 |

Knowing now the dangers of fire retardant to our children, the thought of having my baby face down, or even face up, on a product that is riddled with these dangerous chemicals is frightening.

It is also unsettling to think that a mattress can be labeled “organic”, and STILL contain toxic hormone, reproductive, and neurological-disrupting chemicals. Yes, you read that one correctly. An “organic” mattress does NOT mean “free of toxins” or “natural.” (Something to loose sleep over when it comes to the product your baby spends over half of their young years on.)

You could be getting fooled by toxic marketing techniques! So, before you spend your money to keep your most precious angel safe and dreamy, read this!

Modern, Eco-Friendly Wooden High Chair: Formaldehyde-Free and VOC free paints

By |March 10, 2009 |

It was love at first site! As soon as I saw the Stokke® Tripp Trapp, eco-friendly wooden high chair, I had to know more about it.

What a beautifully constructed piece of functional furniture, with a modern artistry!  (I know, drooling over a highchair may seem infantile, but if you have seen one of these in person, you know exactly what I am talking about.)

Not only does it look ravishingly beautiful, but this is the kind of furniture that grows with your baby!  As soon as your baby can sit at the table with you all for his first taste of mashed veggie he will use his Stokke® highchair.  But even as he sits at his desk studying for his college exams, he will still get full use out of his Tripp Trapp Stokke eco-chair!  We love that! Loaded With Nutritional Goodness, and Your Kids Will Eat It!

By |February 19, 2009 |

I think every parent goes through the “I can’t get my child to eat anything healthy!” phases.  Believe me, we have tried many of the sneaky ways to hide nutritional goodness in food, let me tell you.  Like the spinach in the blueberry cake trick.

But I have to say, Parma! really does take home the cake when it comes to a nutrient dense sprinkle (vegan Parmesan cheese) you can add to nearly any meal.

If the phrase “vegan” Parmesan cheese makes you turn up your nose already, wait just one moment.  If I haven’t tried this personally, and if I have not (and my toddler too) fallen in love with the stuff, I would be thinking the same thing.

Truth be told, I have never had a vegan cheese that I thought tasted good, not until we laid our chompers on Parma!  It is DELICIOUS!  Yumm, yumm, yumm yumm yumm.  And my little girl eats it right out of the container if she can get to it. […]

Happy Mais Eco-friendly Toy Stimulates Creativity For Hours

By |February 12, 2009 |

My daughter’s loves arts and crafts, so I thought Happy Mais would be something she would enjoy.  Little did I know she would be obsessed with it!
When we got our first box, she played all morning long (and could have gone longer if I hadn’t put the box away.)
I’ve never seen her have such a long attention span with anything, not even playdough or finger painting!
She can become easily frustrated (like any other 3 year old)  if she can’t do something by herself. With Happy Mais, she is able to be totally creative without needing to ask for help.
Happy Mais Building Blocks are made from 100% GM-free cornstarch, (“Mais” means “corn” in Italian/French) and dyed with non toxic food colorings. No glue is needed, the starch contained in this happy corn works as a natural glue.  Just wet and stick together! Happy Mais is totally biodegradable and compostable, all of which makes this a truly safe and eco-friendly toy.

Free of High Fructose Corn Syrup: Organic Fruit Lollipops by Yummy Earth

By |February 8, 2009 |

My 2.5 year old loves these natural lollipops, and I was really surprised when I tried one myself.  These Yummy Earth’s Organic Fruit Lollipops are delicious, not too sweet and very fruity!

And since we are always on the hunt for safe alternatives here at SAFbaby, we had to rave about the ingredients in these fruit lollipops:

Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Non-GMO Citric Acid, Organic and Natural flavors (Watermelon, Lemon Oils, Pomegranate, Mango), Organic and Natural Color, Red Cabbage, Purple Cabbage.

Yep, a really safe alternative to other candies on the market filled with high fructose corn syrup (which has been tagged to often contain to GMOs and mercury), artificial colorings, and other harmful ingredients.

So when I see the contrast of offering my little one a treat filled with synthetic flavorings, colorings and other harmful toxins, this natural (and really sweet) alternative is a no-brainer.

The Inexpensive Yet Priceless Gift Of Physical Literacy

By |January 28, 2009 |

After watching  GYMTRIX™, I have been inspired!

Life around our house has since been filled with a little more physical activity between my toddler and I.  It has been so much fun, and is priceless for my toddler’s development!

Some of my favorite GYMTRIX™ activities are quite simple, yet I had not even thought of implementing them into our daily lives.

But, after watching the DVD and learning all the benefits of “physical literacy”, I am encouraged AND equip to implement this play periodically throughout the day!

My favorite activities in these DVDs are….

Toxins Have Us Running For Eco-Friendly Baby and Kid Shoes

By |January 23, 2009 |

I usually check ingredients carefully when it comes to food, cosmetics and toys, but recently I’ve been curious to look more carefully into what goes into shoes.
Have you ever wondered what shoes are made of?
Finding healthy, non-toxic shoes for kids was a real challenge!  I like my baby/toddler shoes to be healthy, comfortable AND stylish, which is even a bigger challenge.
Dangerous chemicals are used to dye leather shoes, and many people who work and live near tanneries are dying from cancer caused by exposure.  Most of our kids shoes are loaded with these chemicals and there are  unfortunately no strict safety standards in the US.
If there were guidelines for toxic chemicals in our children’s clothing and shoes, would we find a great increase in recalls?  We think so.

Adjustable PVC-Free Potty Seat for Toddler by Baby Bjorn

By |December 22, 2008 |

If you are potty training or will be soon, you will be happy to know about this PVC-free potty seat.

The BabyBjörn Toilet Trainer was a real winner since the day it arrived at our homes.

Prior to that we had a single little potty for our baby girl, which worked great for her at first, but was a chore for me to keep clean. Also, we have a small bathroom, so it just felt like it was taking up lots of space.

So, I decided to get a toilet trainer (seat for adult potty) very early in the potty training process and my husband and I presented the new potty seat to her as a special gift. […]

Why Choose a Natural Detangler Over a Toxic One?

By |December 17, 2008 |

Made with organic and natural botanicals, this detangler/leave-in-conditioner by Noli-n-Nali™ rocks!

Oh the joys of having a child that loves wearing 2 ponytails, but that doesn’t love having her hair brushed.

When you have a baby or child, you know about that endless rat’s nest that seems to magically form as the hairdo on the back of their heads.

That hair that goes out of control every time they get into a car seat, awaken from a sleepy-time, or just in general!   Finding a detangler seems the simple answer.  But…

What is typically in leading brand’s detanglers for our babies is alarming to us! […]

Imagination Thrives Inside This Fire-Retardant-Free & PVC-Free Play Tent

By |December 14, 2008 |

SafBaby searched for quite some time before we found a play tent free of fire retardant and PVC for our kids.  We literally asked numerous manufacturers if their tent had fire retardants on them.  The crazy thing was, they would be smiling from ear to ear as they answered our question with a “yes.”

That was until we spoke with HABA®! One rep’s reply was something like that they would rather NOT treat a child’s play space with unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals!  Yeah!  This is what we like to hear.

We have also been guaranteed by the manufacturers that this is a non-treated tent!

So, we inquired a little more and loved what we experienced so much with this amazing play tent that we had to share! […]
