Helping To Make Safe Toy Shopping Easier This Christmas

November 17th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Allergies, BPA-Free, Drinking, Feeding, Fire retardants, Holiday Safety, Natural Remedies, PVC-free, Product Recalls, Toys 2 Comments »

“I’m writing about the challenge of finding safe toys for Christmas. Have you found it’s any easier to find safe toys, now that Congress passed the CPSC law? It doesn’t take effect until February, so I’m wondering if parents can shop with confidence, or if they still have to be careful, checking out each individual toy?”

Wow! These important questions such as these have been coming, and we are happy to address this perfect topic with all of our SafBaby readers.

Toys won’t be safer this Christmas than they were last Christmas, SafBaby believes. This new regulation (starting Feb. 10, 2009) doesn’t mean all toys, as midnight strikes, will suddenly be safe either. They will eventually be safer, but it is very important and wise to know what to look for in finding safer alternatives that are still playfully fun and appealing to our children. Are we experimenting with our babies and GMO? The more we learn, the more SafBaby thinks the answer, sadly, is yes.

And after reading this article, you will understand why our babies and children are developing allergies, a resistance to antibiotics, and what is negatively influencing their sexual development! You’ll never shop the same after reading this article!

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are a threat to our babies health and future. In Part 1 (The Truth About GMO) of this 2 part article, we gave an overview of what GMOs are, and why it is here. If you happened to miss Part 1, we suggest you read that first.

This continuation is more specifically about babies and children, and gives parents safe alternative measures to take. We encourage the appropriate action needed by parents to keep GMOs out of our foods, and this article will also answer any final questions you may have had. Read the rest of this entry »

You may know that GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, but the whole story behind this science is nothing less than SHOCKING.

October 2nd, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Feeding, Fluoride, Natural Remedies, Toys 5 Comments »

We recently interviewed Carol S. Kopf, Media Officer for the Fluoride Action Network (FAN), to get answers to the questions parents, and us at SafBaby, are most concerned about!

Safbaby:
What kind of fluoride is being used to fluoridate drinking water?

Carol Kopf:
Silicofluorides

Safbaby:
What are silicofluorides?

Carol Kopf:
Silicofluorides
are waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry which are dumped, unpurified, into drinking water and allowed (by NSF International-the regulatory body over water additives) to have trace amounts of lead, arsenic, mercury and other toxins present. Read the rest of this entry »

Are We Poisoning Our Babies And Children With Fluoride?

October 1st, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Fluoride 3 Comments »

The fluoride controversy makes us wonder who truly benefits from pouring this hazardous waste into our drinking supply!

Living in one of those states which has plenty of fluoride in our water, we feel the frustration of being “medicated” without our consent, and felt this to be a great topic. Especially since over fluoridating our babies and toddlers can lead to unnecessary health concerns and/or dangers.

Are Food Certification Labels Misleading?

September 19th, 2008 safbaby Posted in 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies, Skin care, Toys No Comments »

They sure are! Especially when it comes to meat, fish and dairy products. Organic, certified-organic, GMO-Free, cage-free, free-range, fair trade and even more labels can be confusing and misleading to consumers.

After not knowing what many of these meant ourselves, SafBaby did some research to find out. What we learned was definitely interesting, so we wanted to share it with you.

It’s not surprising to see the matter in which some labels are used, simply to attract uninformed consumers. For example, “cage-free” doesn’t depict  what you imagine in your head it should mean.

Anti-bacterials hiding in everyday products are toxic to our children!

July 19th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies, Skin care No Comments »

After participating in on a Q&A hosted by the Environmental Working Group , SafBaby is happy to bring you a little more insight on the dangers of “anti-bacterial” products . The questions were answered by Staff Scientist Rebecca Sutton, who also holds a Ph.D in Environmental Chemistry.

Anti-bacterial agents are most commonly, but far from exclusively, found in hand soaps. “But isn’t that a good thing,” one may question? I mean, who wants harmful bacteria hiding on our children and baby’s hands anyway? Isn’t this the best option in hand soap for my family to keep germs at bay? The following insight may surprise you, even if you thought you knew all the answers. Read the rest of this entry »

Safe Gardening With Your Child Is a Gift For Life

July 13th, 2008 admin Posted in 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Development, Drinking, Gardening, Natural Remedies, Play, Skin care No Comments »

Gardening with baby and toddlersIt has been such a pleasure having a small garden, to share with my little girl, the gifts of LIFE. She loves picking her own strawberries and delights in all the colors of each flower.

We use organic potting soil, and also purchased organic veggie starts and herbs. I was surprised at how rewarding it can be to have your own, little organic garden .

When planting sunflowers with her daddy she giggled about the worm in the dirt. Each day we go out and say, “hello sunflower,” and “good morning flowers,” to her new planted friend. Read the rest of this entry »

Milk Money: The Business of Formula

May 14th, 2008 admin Posted in 0-1 yr, Benefits of Breastfeeding, Drinking, Feeding, News, Product Reviews No Comments »

Baby FormulaWhen I left the hospital after having my baby I left with a free diaper bag full of formula samples, bottles, coupons, and even a little formula-promoting cooler to keep my formula filled bottles in.

I had already joyously made the decision that I was going to breast feed my baby and didn’t really think much about the “gifts” I was leaving home with. Now, the more I learn about this “business”, the more I am heart-broken about how mothers are being mislead and baby’s health taking second priority, all for the benefit of infant formula corporations. PedialyteMore expert advice on Dehydration from Dr. Natalie Geary, a top New York City pediatrician, creator and founder of the skincare collection vedaPURE™:

Dehydration happens more easily in children than adults – they need more water and other fluids to maintain cellular and, specifically, kidney function. Milk: Does It Really Do a Body Good?

April 10th, 2008 safbaby2 Posted in 0-1 yr, 1-3 yrs, 3-5 yrs, 5+ yrs, Allergies, Drinking 1 Comment »

Milk Being sensitive to dairy, as many people are, I grew up with a lot of intestinal problems. My mother thought, as many still do now, that milk was good for me. In fact, many parents and grandparents today believe milk to practically be a necessity for their growing children. But plenty of studies show that this is not the case!

But how can this be?…..

We have all certainly been fed to believe that milk is good for all of us. We have all seen the effective marketing ads and we all the know the phrase, “Milk, it does a body good.” (Can’t you see the cow’s milk mustache just by hearing the strategically advertised statement?) But a closer, scientific look at how milk may truthfully be effecting your baby’s health is important for all parents to know. Read the rest of this entry »

Decrease world poverty, buy organic cotton clothing for your baby!

Organic Cotton One Piece Amercian Apparel

Is it sometimes hard for you too? To give up some of those itsy bitsy outfits that your baby grows out of?

Now I am thinking that it is a wonderful thing for another baby to be able to recycle (re-use and reduce) her cute threads too! Most of my baby girl’s clothing is made from cotton. When you think of baby clothing, cotton probably comes to mind as the best natural fabric option. But, is this really the case? Well, it breathes, it is soft and comfortable, and it even absorbs (as cotton diapers do). Probably the first onesie you put on your little angel was cotton, and he/she may even be wearing cotton clothing right now.

However, according to the Sustainable Cotton Project in California, about 1/3 of a pound of chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, processing chemicals and dyes) are used to make just ONE cotton t-shirt! Read the rest of this entry »

Understanding and Eliminating Colic - Naturally!

March 13th, 2008 safbaby Posted in 0-1 yr, Benefits of Breastfeeding, Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies 2 Comments »

istock_000000098490xsmall.jpgI was going to school at the Aloha Ayurveda Academy while I was pregnant. It was a 200 hour course on bringing balance and optimal health to our entire being. One of the principles that Ayurveda teaches, is that the quality of our digestion is in direct proportion to the quality of our overall health and well-being.

To prevent colic in my baby, my teacher and Ayurveda doctor recommended a strict diet for me to follow for the first 10 days after she was born. Barely anything that the hospital offered me for each meal that was in guidelines to this diet, which is for the benefit of the baby and her developing digestive system. My diet’s restrictions followed much of what is offered here in our article by Dr. Linda Folden Palmer, D.C. Author of Baby Matters: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Caring for Your Baby. istock_sickkid.jpgWell, around the holidays my baby girl caught a cold two different times. We traveled on an airplane, were in a completely different climate than we are acclimated to, and (as I know some of you can relate), we didn’t really eat the way we normally do when we are home.

It is the season though. Bugs and viruses are all so common, that at any given week we are all sure to know of at least one friend that is feeling a little under the weather. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Tap Water Safe For My Baby?

Baby BathWe have had a 10-way carbon filter by New Wave for our drinking water for a couple of years now. But, once we moved to Southern California, investing in a shower filter became very important. The thought of bathing my baby in Los Angeles county tap water just didn’t settle right with me.
