Baby FormulaWhen I left the hospital after having my baby I left with a free diaper bag full of formula samples, bottles, coupons, and even a little formula-promoting cooler to keep my formula filled bottles in.

I had already joyously made the decision that I was going to breast feed my baby and didn’t really think much about the “gifts” I was leaving home with. Now, the more I learn about this “business”, the more I am heart-broken about how mothers are being mislead and baby’s health taking second priority, all for the benefit of infant formula corporations. What is it about having a baby, or a toddler running around, that makes time go even faster than it normally does? Maybe it is the precious way they seemingly grow before our eyes, or the miraculous ways in which they learn day in and day out. Whatever it may be, as parents we know it is so true, “it goes so fast!”

Retail Giants to phase out toxic PVC plastics

31tke9rw0vl_aa280_.jpgSparked by a national campaign led by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ), together with a coalition of health and environmental organizations, today Sears Holdings (Sears and Kmart) has announced its plans to begin phasing out products and packaging containing the toxic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, commonly known as vinyl.

Sears and Kmart join Wal-Mart and Target in reducing and phasing out PVC in products and packaging. Target’s policy was just announced last month. Sears Holdings has announced it is working to reduce and phase out PVC in its packaging and merchandise, including encouraging vendors to label their PVC-free merchandise. Additionally, Sears is working to identify safer, more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives to PVC and incorporate them into the design and manufacturing process for private label merchandise and packaging
