Autism and Nutrition

flour1.jpgA friend of mine used to be a nanny for a couple of children with autism. She would tell me that she could tell a profound difference in the children’s behavior according to their diets. I always thought this was so interesting. Now-a-days, more and more studies are being done with diet and autism.

Many of you have heard Jenny McCarthy’s story. She has been in magazines and on CNN with Larry King Live giving her heartfelt testimonial on how diet has made a major impact on helping her boy and their fight with autism. Read the rest of this entry »

Understanding and Eliminating Colic - Naturally!

March 13th, 2008 safbaby Posted in Diapering, Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies, breastfeeding 2 Comments »

istock_000000098490xsmall.jpgI was going to school at the Aloha Ayurveda Academy while I was pregnant. It was a 200 hour course on bringing balance and optimal health to our entire being. One of the principles that Ayurveda teaches, is that the quality of our digestion is in direct proportion to the quality of our overall health and well-being.

To prevent colic in my baby, my teacher and Ayurveda doctor recommended a strict diet for me to follow for the first 10 days after she was born. Barely anything that the hospital offered me for each meal that was in guidelines to this diet, which is for the benefit of the baby and her developing digestive system. My diet’s restrictions followed much of what is offered here in our article by Dr. Linda Folden Palmer, D.C. Author of Baby Matters: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Caring for Your Baby. Baby Matters: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Caring for Your Baby

Breastfeeding isn’t only about providing mother’s milk. While seldom recognized in literature, doctors’ advice or common conversation, there’s a whole lot more to breastfeeding than nutrition and immunity, and some of this can be achieved during bottlefeeding as well.

Breastfeeding has taken quite a bashing over the last century. In order to rebuild acceptance of breastfeeding, breastfeeding advocates have focused on the importance its nutritive and immune support roles. But breastfeeding is designed to be much more than just providing food — it is a time for nursing, a time for comfort and nurturing. This is a time for studying and memorizing each other’s faces, for speaking or singing to your baby and developing her trust and nonverbal communication.

Babies clearly seek nursing in order to ease the pain of a bump or illness, to relieve stress or to regain security after being frightened. Read the rest of this entry »

61u-qudfbil_aa250_.jpegIt is absolutely wonderful to be part of a movement that is truly looking out for the best interest of babies everywhere! SafBaby.com is honored to work with organizations such as Environmental Working Group (EWG) to bring you the latest news and research on pertinent information for the safety of our children.

A little while back we wrote an article that came from the research of EWG, giving the facts about the newest findings of BPA in ALL infant formulas. (You can read more about the dangers of BPA in our article “What’s Lurking In Your Baby’s Sippy Cup“, and the connection with BPA and infant formula in our article “Toxic Infant Formula, and What You Can Do Now.“) Read the rest of this entry »

Boosting Baby’s Immune System, NATURALLY!

January 29th, 2008 safbaby Posted in Drinking, Feeding, Natural Remedies No Comments »

istock_sickkid.jpgWell, around the holidays my baby girl caught a cold two different times. We traveled on an airplane, were in a completely different climate than we are acclimated to, and (as I know some of you can relate), we didn’t really eat the way we normally do when we are home.

It is the season though. Bugs and viruses are all so common, that at any given week we are all sure to know of at least one friend that is feeling a little under the weather. Read the rest of this entry »

Lead and Cadmium in Dinnerware

January 6th, 2008 safbaby Posted in Feeding No Comments »

SengwareI’ve heard about lead in dinnerware but was never concerned about it before we had our daughter.

I bought our dinnerware at least 10 years ago and just recently decided to research this topic after all the latest toy recalls due to lead. After all, we put hot food on our plates at least twice a day and our kids come into contact with possible lead more likely this way than through toys.

Lead and cadmium is still commonly used in dinnerware today. Unless it is stated to be lead and cadmium free, they most likely contain both. Read the rest of this entry »

Should I Panic If It’s Not Organic?

October 7th, 2007 safbaby2 Posted in Feeding 1 Comment »

new_organicfruits.gifDo you remember those drug prevention commercials? An egg, and an egg frying in a pan…”This is your brain… this is your brain on drugs”. It was a very effective image to imprint what drugs can do.

Well, after diving into my study on certified organic and non-organic foods, I can’t but help to recall this commercial, and thinking of the frying egg I think to myself, “this could be your baby’s brain, and nervous system, on pesticides”.

We have all heard the phrase, “don’t panic it’s organic“. Quite a catchy phrase really. Read the rest of this entry »

Why all pacifiers and bottle nipples are NOT treated equal

What’s lurking in your baby’s sippy cup or bottle?

August 25th, 2007 safbaby Posted in Drinking, Feeding No Comments »

Baby with Sippy CupI have known that drinking out of plastic bottles isn’t the healthiest choice. But, more recently now, after having my baby, I have looked into the issue a little deeper, and I have become concerned by what I am learning.

“Of 115 published animal studies, 81% found significant effects from even low-levels of exposure to BPA. While none of the 11 industry-funded studies found significant effects, over 90% of government-funded studies did so. Read the rest of this entry »
