CPSC Toy Safety Law Keeps Our Kids Safer, Keeping Phthalates Off The Shelves

safbaby2 | February 10, 2009 | 2 Comments

If you have been a loyal reader of SAFbaby.com since the beginning of December, you have been part of our obsession with toy safety and the new toy safety regulations (which go into effect today.)

Our post titled Are We The Dumping Ground for Toxic Toys? questioned the revision to the laws that were put in place to protect our children.  These revisions allowed toxic toys (tainted with phthalates and lead) to still be sold in stores, if manufactured BEFORE Feb. 10, 2009.

We are so pleased to announce that revisions have been placed, and as of today, NO TOYS INTENDED FOR THE USE OF BABIES UNDER THE AGE OF 12 can contain an amount greater that 0.1%  of six phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP, and DnOP) regardless of when they were manufactured.

The fact that the CPSC issued guidance for complying with phthalates requirements, in this new Child Safety Law, is a great step forward (but not an end means to) for the safety of our babies and children!  Yahoo!

For more on a brief history of toxins making their way into our children’s toys, read our interview titled:  Investigating The True Story On Toxic Toys In America.

So does this make plastic toys purchased after Feb 2009 ok? This article doesn’t mention PVC. Do all plastic toys have PVC which still makes them toxic? How do I know which ones are ok? I found this helpful website http://www.greenyour.com/lifestyle/baby/toys/tips/choose-nontoxic-plastic-toys , but it states to look for the recycle code to determine safety… but none of my plastic toys have that symbol. I have SO many plastic toys, do I need to get rid of all of them to keep my babies safe? I cant help but feel frusterated that they would make toys for babies toxic in the first place!!! Thank you SAFbaby!
