Flexibath’s PVC-Free, Phthalate-Free and BPA-Free Folding Bathtub for Babies and Toddlers

safbaby | May 11, 2010 | 0 Comments

Looking for a cool, safe, BPA-free and PVC-free bath tub for babies and small children that you can fold flat to store away? Once baby has outgrown this tub, use it as a storage or recycle bin, just perfect for that too!  We are blown away with how cool this water saving bath tub for little ones is!  What a great invention Flexibath.

The creator if this cool tub is from Denmark and Flexibath is already a bestseller in Europe.  It is a huge hit in our home right now too, because I enjoy giving my little boy baths in the innovative Flexibath. I find quite challenging to bathe him otherwise.  Also, we don’t have a lot of storage space, so this bathtub is what we needed.   So if you are into space saving, voila!  Flexibath can be folded in a breeze and can fit just about anywhere: under the sink, bed, closet or in a corner.

There are so many reasons why Safbaby awarded the Flexibath with their prestigious Excellence Award. I fell in love with it from bath #1.

Mom Approved – Child Tested’ Excellence Award Winner

I used to bath my 8 month old son in baby bath seat in the big tub. He enjoyed it ’til he was 6 month old and once he was able to pull himself up, it was nearly impossible to keep him in his seat.  The seat didn’t allow him much movement and he could only sit in one position. Then Flexibath came to the rescue! He’s a very curious little guy and likes to move sides, turn around, stand up and lie on his belly. Now he can! The tub is not as slippery as the regular bath tub but you still need to be there at all times and make sure your baby is safe.

He’s been bumping his head a few times on the Flexibath but luckily it doesn’t hurt unlike in a regular bath tub.

To rinse him before I take him out of the bath, I usually remove the drain plug, wait ’til the water drains and shower him with the shower head. This is so practical, most bathtubs don’t come with a drain plug.

Although the companies advertises the tub for children 0-4, I do recommend to use the tub for babies older than 6 month and add a baby seat that fits in the tub at first. If the baby can’t sit well alone it will slide constantly and it’s very hard to soap and hold the baby at the same time.

Samantha’s 3 year old daughter also enjoys the Flexibath outdoors. Most baby bath tubs don’t fit toddlers, so this is another plus. What a great idea to enjoy nature and enjoy a bubble bath with biodegradable soap.

Here is why I love Flexibath so much and think it should be on every baby shower list:

  • Unlike most other tubs for babies or adult bath tubs, it is free of  harmful chemicals.
  • So easy to fold flat and store away. It’s very light and a great space saver!
  • It’s so convenient to bring with us when we travel.
  • Has many different uses, not just bath tub. Last time we drove to grandma’s house we used it as a toy box. I also use it as a laundry basket. So, once the kids outgrow this tub, it will have many other uses.
  • The bottom of the bath has non-slip surface.
  • Because of it’s size, it’s water saving compared to filling a regular bath tub.
  • It’s easier to control than a big tub, don’t have to worry he touches or knocks his head on the faucet.
  • Most baby baths don’t fit toddlers.  Very cool that once baby grows, this can be used outdoors for summertime fun too!
  • Easy-to-use drain plug. Don’t need to lift the tub to drain the water.

What is Flexibath made of?

What do most other tubs have in their plastic containers that FLEXIBATH does not?  Many tubs on the market today may contain PVC, Phthalates, Lead and BPA.

PVC and Phthalates
The PVC tubs that are labeled ‘Phthalates-free’ are not safer, according to Mike Shade from Center for Health, Environment and Justice. Products that are phthalate-free may contain other potentially harmful chemical additives.  These chemicals can affect the central nervous system, skin, liver, immune system and reproductive system. Since the chemicals, called organotins are not 100% bound to the polymer, they can easily migrate from within a PVC product to the surface.

Lead
Older bathtubs, made of porcelain enamel may contain high amounts of lead.

BPA
A bathtub made of hard, clear plastic is probably made from polycarbonate. Studies and tests show that trace amounts of BPA are leaching from polycarbonate containers into foods and liquids. BPA is a  hormone disrupting chemical, it acts like an estrogen in the body and is toxic at even low doses.

The FlexiBath™ is a SAFER ALTERNATIVE made from:

  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Thermoplastic Elastomeric (TPE) is composed of carbon and hydrogen.

The PP is a hard material which enforces the sides and the bottom of the bathtub and thus keeps it stable. The TPE is used in the corners and in the bottom as thin “lines” enabling the bathtub to fold flat. The drain plug is also made from TPE. Both PP and TPE are non-toxic and are free of harmful chemicals.

The packaging is made from recycled paper. The tub complies with the EU standard/EN-71 & US standard/ASTM F2670-09 (CPSIA) Infant bathtubs.

Size of Flexibath

The Flexibath expands 26 inches long, 15 inches wide and 9 inches high and can accommodate two babies.

It says that the bath can be used for children age 0-4. I do think the tub is a little to small for my 4 year old daughter who is 104 cm tall but may fit a smaller 4 year old.

To find Flexibath near you, please visit Flexibath-usa.com. Although sold in many different colors in Europe,  it is available in  only 3 different colors here in the US: white/gray, light blue/dark blue and pink/red and costs $39.90.
