Mommy Power Has Been Unleashed and SAFbaby Interviewed

the_Internet_MommyOne of my favorite articles here on SAFbaby is one in which we interviewed Kimberely Clayton Blaine, MA, MFT (the “Go-To-Mom”) on the benefits of outdoor play for our children! So, when she asked to interview US for her newest book, the Internet Mommy, we were excited.  What an honor for us to be such an inspiration to this amazing mom, child development expert, author, and executive producer of www.TheGoToMom.TV.   What an honor to be amongst so many incredible women in this book!

This book is a colorful bouquet of interviews and short stories, drawn from a diverse group of moms who are spending personal and business time on their computers.  There is delightful humor, potent business sense, and MOMMY POWER alive in every section, making for an uplifting and easy read.  If you are a mommy reading this post now (spending time on the computer), I am SURE you will find yourself laughing aloud and fully inspired to follow your dreams,  while reading this book.

SAFbaby.com’s Interview in The Internet Mommy

The following is an exert from Kimberely Blaine’s newest book, with permissions to be recopied here.  The interview was answered by Samantha Fox, on behalf of SAFbaby.

Safbaby.com is brought to you by two mothers with a great vision and strong passion!  We want to offer to you what we could not personally find ourselves – clear, to-the-point-information on raising our baby in a toxic-free environment. There is so much information out there, but parents have to go to many different resources, spending so much precious time, simply to become educated on the endless topics that are of great importance.  So with big dreams, we created www.safbaby.com.

How long have you had your business and what are your future plans?

15 months.  Our future plans are to positively influence parents everywhere to create healthy environments for their children. We hope to expand the way parents think about choosing safer alternatives.

How much time to you spend online per day? Both personally and professionally.

4-8 hours a day about 6 days a week.

Did you finance your start up, borrow from family, have investors, or do all the work yourself?

Did all the work ourselves. Sandra and I are perfect business partners because our work compliments one another and we both are gifted in different ways, bringing SafBaby together perfectly.

What was your main inspiration in starting your business and creating your website? Why did you take the risk? Who were most influential to you when you started up?

We could not find the answers to all of our questions, and wanted to give this to parents: a one stop place to find answers to creating safe alternatives for their babies. We took the risk because we were so passionate about this. When we started we were influenced by the love for our babies!

Briefly describe your family life and if your children had an impact on starting an online business.

I would say our babies had everything to do with us starting our business. Sandra and I both wish to raise our babies and feel happy to be able to work from home. We want to create a business where we can work from home, and where ever we may live.

Did you have competitors when you started up? How did that effect your decision?

When we started we were unaware of any other blog or website such as SafBaby. Now there are lots of them, but not specialized in the same way we are so we feel that SafBAby is unique.

What were the most important steps that you took to make a name for yourself/and or the business? What do you consider your best marketing tool? (i.e., social networking, hiring a PR firm, blogging, follow up with contacts, placing ads, co-branding)

Continuing to work passionately, even though it was not financially paying off. First, we had to build trust and respect with our readers and other experts. We greatly strive to build relationships with those we work with. For us, search engine and more behind the scene computer stuff is so important too. Learning how to be effective with this is important.

What advice would you give to other women who are thinking about starting an online business?

Go for it! Find something you are passionate about. Be patient.

Is this your destiny? If not, what is your dream job?

This is definitely a part of it. I also love teaching yoga. I dream of having a resort on an island where we teach yoga retreats, retreats on living sustainably, and in making a big difference in all that safbaby speaks of. Wake people up and live consciously.

If you could have lunch with any woman today, who would it be and why?

My mom because she lives far from me and any time I could spend time with her I would!

What are your two favorite websites?

I really respect EWG’s skin deep.

The Internet Mommy by Kimberely Blaine

I have been turned on to so many new sites, founded by fellow mamas, in this book.  I have folded the corners down on almost every other page, totally intrigued by the work, and the play, that these women are creating in their lives.  I am looking forward to finding the time to visit each site and learn more!

Thanks so much Kimberely for highlighting the hopes and dreams of SAFbaby.com in this remarkable book!  The Internet Mommy is available through Amazon.com for only $12.95.
