What’s special and convenient about Naturpedic’s organic mattress for babies and children is that they have a 2-in-1 crib and twin mattress.
This versatile 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra is waterproof on one side, perfect for infants and bed wetters,(because an accident with potty training toddlers is bound to happen) while the quilted side provides a more luxurious feel for older children. (They do have mattresses that are completely covered in their waterproof layer, or ones that are 100% quilted too.)
For now, since my daughter is just 2.5, we keep the waterproof side face up, and once my daughter is a little older, we will flip the mattress for the quilted side up. I love that this mattress has that component of “growing with her” built right in! I feel that this will give us many, many years of use.
PVC-Free Waterproof Mattress for Baby and Toddler
The waterproof coating is made of polyethylene and is a SAFE ALTERNATIVE to waterproof barriers typically made from PVC/vinyl. Polyethylene is an environmentally friendly plastic that is used throughout the food packaging industry for its purity and non-toxic properties.
The polyethylene surface of the No-Compromise Organic Baby Crib Mattress is specially formulated using only pure food grade materials, creating the ultimate non-toxic and waterproof mattress cover. It is also easy to clean and will not stain.
So your next question is probably something like ours was. A plastic coated mattress? Uhmm, how comfortable can THAT be?
Honestly, this EXTREMELY THIN layer of protection makes for an absolutely comfortable sleeping experience.
Sandra’s (Safbaby co-founder) baby sleeps on a quilted latex mattress, and she was very hesitant to think an innerspring, coated with a safe and non-toxic waterproof barrier could be considered a comfortable sleeping space. But after testing this mattress out, she was 100% impressed about how truly comfortable it was!
I just have to note that we love the comfort of this mattress also. It is supportive, yet still soft and dreamy.
This protective layer also makes for a dust-mite proof surface! But, that is not all. The more we learn, the better we sleep.
Q and A With Naturepedic’s Founder Barry A. Cik
As parents and researchers we still had a few more questions. So, we interviewed founder of Naturepedic, Barry A. Cik Barry A. Cik, PE, CP, BCEE, QEP, REM, CHMM* to get that last bit of clarity.
How do you pass the stringent fire protection laws and regulations without the use of PBDEs?
The primary filling material used in nearly all crib mattresses today is polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is highly flammable because it is essentially a petroleum product. In fact, the National Association of State Fire Marshals refers to it as “solid gasoline.”
In order to combat this hazard and pass Federal and State flammability standards, polyurethane foam has typically been treated or wrapped with harsh industrial fire retardant chemicals. These chemicals introduce other health and toxicity issues. Some of these chemicals have already been associated with thyroid and liver damage, hyperactivity, and changes in motor behavior and other brain functions. These chemicals typically constituted 10-30% of the foam by weight and can easily become airborne.
At Naturepedic, we take a different approach. Natural and organic cotton is a far superior filling material and is significantly less flammable to begin with.
Our exclusive fire protection system is based on the unique fire retardant properties of baking soda and hydrated silica bonded to cellulose fiber. Baking soda is a non-toxic substance with excellent fire retardant properties.
Baking soda is a non-toxic substance with excellent fire retardant properties and can be found as a naturally occurring compound. Silica is a natural mineral that comprises about 60% of the earth’s crust. Clay, rocks, sand, etc. are all made primarily of silica. It is a major constituent of human tissue, bones, teeth, etc., and is even available at health food stores as a food supplement. It is also a primary ingredient in natural toothpaste.
The cellulose fiber used is derived primarily from eucalyptus and poplar trees and has a low carbon footprint. These materials provide the best way to meet fire regulations without the use of dangerous chemicals or allergenic wool.
Do you think there are any relations between SIDS and chemical exposure in mattresses?
More and more scientific research is demonstrating that many, if not most, of today’s childhood disorders, are caused by or aggrieved by harmful chemicals. While it is not within my professional jurisdiction (as I’m an environmental engineer and not a physician) to conclude regarding medical issues, there seems little question that chemicals are a likely concern.
Why did you decide not to use wool and natural latex in your mattresses?
Naturepedic mattresses do not use any natural latex or wool due to their potential allergenic concerns. Additionally, Naturepedic mattresses do not use any animal hairs or other animal derived ingredients or components.
Your Greenguard® Indoor Air Quality Certified certified, what does that mean?
GREENGUARD is the most trusted independent third party certification program in the United States for low product emissions. Naturepedic mattresses have tested and qualified for the prestigious GREENGUARD INDOOR AIR QUALITY CERTIFIED® status. In addition, Naturepedic organic baby crib mattresses and children’s organic mattresses pass even the strictest criteria – the GREENGUARD Children & Schools(SM) test.
This gives parents confidence and ensures the public that the Naturepedic line of organic non-toxic baby crib and children’s mattresses will not “off gas” harmful chemicals or pollute the air quality around their baby’s crib or child’s sleeping environment.
Where are you mattresses made?
Cleveland, Ohio. Not only are all our products made in the USA, but we only source our components from the USA. For example, we can get innersprings from China for much cheaper pricing, but we won’t do it.
What is the average life span on a Naturepedic mattress?
We provide a limited lifetime warranty, so it will last a long time.
How do I recycle my old mattress?
Currently, there is no good system in the industry at all. We’re working on that. Meanwhile, if a customer want to send back a mattress that’s no longer needed, we’ll separate out the materials and recycle them as best as we can.
Being that we hire Amish workers, they take home some of our items that would otherwise end up in the trash.
How do I clean the mattress if it gets wet/dirty?
Just wipe it with mild soap and water.
Are your mattresses only available in the US?
At this point, basically yes, but we’ll ship individually overseas if requested.
