Charlie\'s Soap - Safe, Non-toxic and biogradable Laundry Detergent

I feel as if I want to get atop of a soap box and shout out loud, “Charlie’s detergent is amazing!”  I know, kind of seems silly, but it is so true.  This is really amazing and powerful stuff.

Your next thought may be something like, “No way, I have tried natural cleaners and they just never work.”  But let me tell you something:  my husband AND my father are even talking about this stuff!

Testimonials For Charlie’s Natural Powdered Laundry Detergent

  1. My husband and I curled up on the couch together one night to watch a flick after our baby was asleep.  As we pulled the freshly laundered blanket over us (washed earlier in the day by my honey) I immediately noticed something wonderful.  “This blanket feels so CLEAN, so FRESH,”  I said.  He thought I was joking because he knew I was potentially going to write a review on this product if I liked it.   The truth of the matter was, I wasn’t even thinking about that.  I had forgotten all about the new detergent, until he started giggling at me.   From this day on I found a new love in the laundry detergent department, Charlie!  (But you will always be my true love John.)
  2. Ironically the next testimony is from my husband!  He had  mentioned one day that his socks all feel brand new again.  He had noticed the difference once we changed our detergent.  I was actually amazed that he vocalized his being impressed with the soap.  A HUGE thumbs up for Charlie’s.
  3. My dad is here visiting his granddaughter, and us, for 6 weeks and is additionally helping me by doing all the laundry!  He was floored at the small amount of powder that is needed for each load.  Honestly, I was stunned that he just came out with it one day “That Charlie’s is awesome!  I can’t believe that you only use that small amount for an entire load!”

Due to Charlie’s supernatural abilities to make clothes feel really fresh, we highly recommend this stuff to everyone.  Whether you are a mom constantly washing cloth diapers, or a bachelor washing jeans and t-shirts every-now-and-then, you’ve got to try Charlie’s Laundry Powder.

The liquid detergent rocks too, but we love the powder so much because it is stored in a great paper bag.  The ending waste factor here is almost zero!  The liquid comes in a plastic container, which yes you can recycle, but the packaging for the powder detergent simply blows everything else out there on the market away.  Another plus in the eco-friendly department!

Safe, “Green” and Biodegradable Laundry Soap

A revolutionary approach to clean, Charlie’s Soap Laundry Liquid doesn’t just cover up stains and odors, it actually removes them.  At 80 full sized loads for around $15, it’s cheaper than the national brands, too.

I LOVE Charlie’s as well! It works great on cloth diapers! Plus it’s made in NC (where I live), so I’m buying from a local business. :)

  2. Meg says:

There are reports of this soap causing irritation when used on cloth diapers. If you have a baby with very sensitive skin you should maybe get a trial amount from someone before buying the whole bag. But, I have heard good things about it on regular clothing!

Response from C. Taylor Sutherland, Pres. of Charlie’s Soap, Inc.

Ah yes. This little thing. It all started way back in 2006. A certain
vendor of cloth diapers was using a product that we had helped create with a
little technical consulting back in the 80′s. This is before Charlie’s Soap
was made to be sold to the public. We don’t make that product any more.
Anyway, this diaper vendor bought that product and loved it. Then the
vendor got a big deal to sell diapers to a large distributor that didn’t
deal with the detergent that we had helped with. So instead of simply
halting the endorsing of the first detergent, there seemed to be a concerted
effort to denigrate it. The vendor called here one day while looking for a
different detergent and got wind that we had helped create this other
detergent and equated the two. They aren’t the same. Anyway, they then
went on the war wagon telling everybody how horrible a company we were and
what a horrible detergent ours was when the vendor admitted to us to never
even trying it. Fueled by the rage of one irrational person, other people
began to see the symptoms that were made up in the first place.

For a while I just paced back and forth screaming at the computer. There
was nothing that I really could do, because I didn’t want to go down any
legal pathway and really just wanted to rest on our laurels. The strategy
worked. Our business doubled. People heard the rumors, were curious
because they didn’t want to believe the horrible things, and found out for
themselves that they weren’t true and told their friends.

But being the worry-wart that I am, I continued to listen to the issues and
the more I did, the more I started to piece together a pattern of what was
going on. I listened some more and finally put together the diaper sheet
which is in the packet I sent, and attached here. But I’ll go into some
detail below. There was, in fact, some misuse occurring.

    1) I found that many mothers with the problem were using Brand X for their
clothes but Charlie’s for the diapers. This creates a problem because the
first load of diapers ends up being used to clean the tub out. So the first
load of diapers is filthy, covered in detergent residue from the previous
load, and waste material. They put those diapers on the child who then
turns beet red. The Charlie’s Soap is long gone, but never was given a fair
shake at removing the waste and dirt and bacteria because there was just too
    much to deal with.

    2) I also found that many instructions out there for washing diapers say to
use half the amount of detergent that you would normally use for clothes.
This makes sense for other detergents because none of them rinse out (ask
for their stringent rinsability data), preferring to “clean” by
strategically covering stains and odor-causing bacteria. Charlie’s Soap
doesn’t work that way. Yes, a diaper load is usually small, but the amount
of soil is much higher. If you don’t use the full dose (unless you have a
tiny washing machine), then you’re just not using enough to clean, and you
end up leaving the waste material behind. The Charlie’s Soap is again, long
gone, but wasn’t given a fair shot at cleaning.

    3) If you’re new to Charlie’s Soap, there is usually a transition period
that you have to get through. It takes a few washes of a garment before the
old detergent is fully removed. Until that time, the Charlie’s Soap is
cleaning nothing but old detergent residue. In the case of diapers, it’s
leaving the waste, while it’s cleaning the residues. The great news is that
the diapers will soon be really usable as they get back to their factory
specs. The bad news is that while that old stuff is coming out, it’s
getting pulled to the outer layer of the garment where many more than the
recommended doses can come into contact with the skin. AND the waste is not
coming out because the Charlie’s Soap is busy going after the easy
stuff…of which there is a lot. Tests have shown that all old detergent
residues are removed from the tightest-weaved fabrics after 10 washes, but
the majority is gone after 4-6 washes. So I tell parents who are new to
Charlie’s Soap to wash diapers that have been washed in other detergents to
wash those diapers a good 4 to 6 times before even thinking about using them
again. Many parents were getting their Charlie’s Soap and washing the
diapers once and then putting them back onto the poor child. That diaper
has umpteen loads of Brand X brought to the surface along with bacteria and
everything else. The child then turns beet red again, or worse. There’s no
Charlie’s there because, again, it rinses completely. It’s just not done
    removing all that old junk.

    4) This is really the most important thing. Too many parents to which I’ve
talked don’t disinfect. I can’t imagine why this is. Charlie’s
Soap is about the best detergent money can buy, but it’s not a miracle
worker. If you put a billion bacteria in a diaper, and then wash 99.9% of
them away, that still leaves 1 million bacteria. In an hour, that turns
into 2 million, then 4, then 16… You see where we’re going with this.
You have to disinfect because Charlie’s Soap DOES NOT cover up any bacteria
that it might have missed. NOT AT ALL. Hot water doesn’t kill the
dangerous bacteria. It only kills the innocuous germs. The same goes for a
hot dryer. Now, I’m not going to tell what the best disinfectant is,
because people’s opinions vary wildly; but it is strongly urged that you do
something, even if it’s just boiling or sunning. Many mothers have come
back to me with comments like “Why do I need to disinfect? It’s from their
own body, so it can’t be bad for them.” We feel this is dangerous. Two
washes and a splash of disinfectant (or sunning or boiling) will usually
kill and wash away all the bad germs.

I hope this helps clear it up. On a personal note, we’ve got young babies
in this family and they (and I) grew up on Charlie’s Soap. We have a vested
interest in making sure that the product we say is safe to use on people’s
babies has been used on ours.

    Does that help?

The upshot is basically that Charlie’s Soap always rinses out when you use
the recommended dosage. It might miss something which might take another
wash, or a changing of your routine, but it ALWAYS rinses away. So it can’t
cause any problems itself if it’s not there. But you just have to make sure
it’s used properly so that the dirt and germs it’s trying to wash away are
really gone. It takes no effort on the part of a chemist to cover something
up. That’s why we’re different. We try to actually wash the dirt away and
sometimes, you just have to give it a little help.

  4. Meg says:

Good to know. Thanks for the information!

  5. Shaunee says:

Wow! Thanks for that lengthy explanation! I’ve heard the “rumor” of skin irritation and therefore never bothered using Charlie’s Soap. I was told to you Tide Original, but wanted something more natural, I’ve had good luck with Soapnuts for her diapers but didn’t cut it for her clothing, I will definitely be trying Charlie’s Soap! Thanks for clearing all this up.

  6. Henry says:

This is a really great website! I’m always worried about baby products (I have a one year old). It seems like there are so many chemicals and unhealthy substances all around us and it worries me. Thanks for sharing this help!

  7. Heather says:

Charlie’s Soap is FABULOUS on diapers and on my sensitive skin for all of our other laundry. Ive been converting my extended family to it, too. You do need a bit of disinfectant (bleach, oxybleach with no additives, or some such) every few washes with the diapers, as you should use with any detergent and diapers. We’ve had so many fewer rashes after switching to Charlie’s Soap, it’s wonderful! It’s also great that we don’t need softner or dryer sheets anymore for our regular laundry. Our front load machine no longer smells from detergent residue, either! Don’t hesitate. Buy it, follow the first time use instructions, love it!
