Safe and Non-toxic Organic Nap Mat by Sewn Natural: PVC-Free and Fire Retardant-Free

By |May 13, 2010 |

Nap mats are designed to keep our precious children cozy during quiet nap times in day care, preschool and kindergarten.  They are not suppose to be a toxic breathing space that may affect the long term health of their brain, nervous system, respiratory systems and (oh yeah) endocrine systems.

When I started looking for a safe nap mat for my little one for preschool I thought I must be caught up in a horrible nightmare.   Almost all sleep mats are  made of PVC/vinyl and fire retardant chemical soaked foams!  Oh my goodness, I wouldn’t want my child playing with a vinyl toy let alone sleeping for hours on a PVC mat!

But now I can rest assured that my little angel will be taking naps at school that DO benefit her brain!   We are super happy to tell you about a chemical-free, organic cotton and hemp sleep mat that we found on Etsy and is made by hand in Ottawa, Canada.  Now we can sleep tight at night knowing that this safe alternative sleep mat is available for our little dreamers. This SPF Sun Hat for Kids and Adults Tops The Rest!

By |June 15, 2009 |

This Play Hat from Sunday Afternoons is just about the coolest invention in an SPF hat for children that we’ve seen!

When it comes to sun protection clothing, it is nice to know what to look for.  This Sun Hat carries a 50+ UPF!  If a garment has a UPF factor (Ultra Violet Protection Factor) of 50 attached to it, this means that just 1/50th of the sun’s radiation will reach the skin.

Our children have such delicate skin.  My daughter’s skin is especially sensitive on her scalp, face and around her eyes.  So keeping her head covered while she is playing in the great outdoors is smart and safe.

There are many reasons why this hat is topping the rest…..

Organic Swaddle Blankets by Solana Baby Wear: Non-toxic Dyes and Formaldehyde-free

By |May 2, 2009 |

I didn’t know anything about swaddling when I had my first baby, but after watching the Happiest Baby on the Block and trying it out, swaddling our little girl was the easiest way to get her to sleep peacefully.  Not to mention, swaddling can help relieve colic and helps an infant to feel safe, as if still snug in mama’s womb.

I was not happy though with the heavy cotton receiving blankets I bought, I was constantly afraid my baby would overheat and checked on her often.

Additionally, most conventional receiving/swaddling blankets contain harmful dyes, formaldehyde, synthetics (like polyester) and fire retardants.  If you choose a Certified Organic Cotton Swaddle however, you can be certain that what is blanketing your little one’s brand new skin (and nervous system) is 100% pure goodness. Natural Mat’s Organic Cotton and Natural Latex Mattress: The Coco Mat

By |March 27, 2009 |

Natural Mat is a respectable mattress company that passes strict US Fire Retardants standards without any use of toxic fire retardants. Right on!  This is not easy to find.  (Please beware of the “organic” label on mattresses unless you really know what you are looking for.)

Natural Mat is truly a safe, non-toxic, chemical-free crib mattress that we recommend. Natural Mat uses natural latex, cruelty-free wool and organic cotton in their mattresses.  However, their Coco Mat is latex free.

‘Natural Latex’ was a topic we were feeling quite confused with, so  Natural Mat helped clarify with us how their “natural” process works since they do use natural latex in their more expensive line of organic mattresses.  Also, we cover the subject of potential allergies, and other important concerns in our exclusive interview below!

Naturepedic’s Organic Cotton Mattress: Wool Free and Latex Free

By |March 26, 2009 |

What’s special and convenient about Naturpedic’s organic mattress for babies and children is that they have a 2-in-1 crib and twin mattress.

This versatile 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra is waterproof on one side, perfect for infants and bed wetters,(because an accident with potty training toddlers is bound to happen) while the quilted side provides a more luxurious feel for older children. (They do have mattresses that are completely covered in their waterproof layer, or ones that are 100% quilted too.)

For now, since my daughter is just 2.5, we keep the waterproof side face up, and once my daughter is a little older, we will flip the mattress for the quilted side up.  I love that this mattress has that component of “growing with her” built right in!  I feel that this will give us many, many years of use. […]

Non-toxic Crib Mattress: Organic doesn’t mean safer!

By |March 25, 2009 |

Knowing now the dangers of fire retardant to our children, the thought of having my baby face down, or even face up, on a product that is riddled with these dangerous chemicals is frightening.

It is also unsettling to think that a mattress can be labeled “organic”, and STILL contain toxic hormone, reproductive, and neurological-disrupting chemicals. Yes, you read that one correctly. An “organic” mattress does NOT mean “free of toxins” or “natural.” (Something to loose sleep over when it comes to the product your baby spends over half of their young years on.)

You could be getting fooled by toxic marketing techniques! So, before you spend your money to keep your most precious angel safe and dreamy, read this!

Part 2: Tips To Keep Toxic Fire Retardant Chemicals Out Of Our Kids Bodies

By |March 18, 2009 |

If you happened to miss our previous post regarding the dangers of toxic fire retardant chemicals to our babies and children, and where these chemicals are hiding, please read that first.  It is quite eye-opening to say the least!

Unfortunately, it is impossible to rid ourselves completely from toxic flame retardants.   They hide everywhere from wood panelings to computers, light switches and smoke detectors, carpets, sofas and the list continues.

Even though some of the two most toxic fire retardants are no longer produced  here, they are still found in our homes, and their harmful gases will be around for many years to come.

As you know these flame retardants outgas over time and can accumulate in dust, so cleaning often is crucial, especially if you have a little one crawling around and putting their hands and everything else into their mouths.

There are other things you can do to reduce your family’s exposure to toxic fire retardants, and we have laid them out for you below. […]

US Children Polluted With Toxic Fire Retardants: Part 1

By |March 16, 2009 |

Did you know that everyday baby and children’s products can contain high amounts of toxic fire retardants?

These flame retardants have been shown to cause serious health disorders including endocrine disruption, cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, reproductive and neurological disorders and learning disabilities such as ADHD, mental retardation, and hyperactivity.

Disturbingly enough, chemical fire retardants commonly hide in products that are in very close proximity to our babies and children:  mattresses, portable cribs, bassinets, infant carriers, strollers, walkers, backpack carriers, pillows, high chairs, play tent, baby/toddler seats and electronics.

I’ve been trying to avoid fire retardant since I was pregnant with my first child.  I believe that exposing my baby to these toxic chemicals do more harm than good. Unfortunately, it is quite a challenge to find safe alternatives, especially here in California where we have the strictest fire retardant laws in the country.

I naively believed that anything labeled with “organic cotton” (sofa, upholstered chair, bassinet, mattress, etc.) is automatically free of toxic (fire retardant) chemicals. Unfortunately, that is not true! […]

Imagination Thrives Inside This Fire-Retardant-Free & PVC-Free Play Tent

By |December 14, 2008 |

SafBaby searched for quite some time before we found a play tent free of fire retardant and PVC for our kids.  We literally asked numerous manufacturers if their tent had fire retardants on them.  The crazy thing was, they would be smiling from ear to ear as they answered our question with a “yes.”

That was until we spoke with HABA®! One rep’s reply was something like that they would rather NOT treat a child’s play space with unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals!  Yeah!  This is what we like to hear.

We have also been guaranteed by the manufacturers that this is a non-treated tent!

So, we inquired a little more and loved what we experienced so much with this amazing play tent that we had to share! […]

When I took our Sarah’s Silks Canopies out of the box I was surprisingly impressed!

I knew I was going to like this beautiful silk dream space, but I really didn’t think I would be this blown away. The feel of the fabrics, and the detail in the little silk seahorse and starfish put a smile on my face too.

The quality of this silk gauze is absolutely luxurious. Dreamy, whimsical, and absolutely silky! […]

A Simple Baby Wrap With Many Benefits

By |November 14, 2008 |

It’s Babywearing week (Nov 12-18) and we thought it would be perfect timing to highlight the Moby™ Baby Wrap, especially since there are so many benefits to wearing your baby.

At first I was a little overwhelmed when I took my wrap out of the cotton bag: 5.5 meters of soft stretch cotton cloth. What now?

Because I am a visual learner, I decided to watch the instruction video from Moby™ Wrap. Simple!
Moby™ Wrap’s Classic Hug Hold
The video demonstrates the ‘classic hug hold’! It is incredible easy to follow and a few minutes later – voilà – I had my Moby Wrap perfectly wrapped around my upper body.

I tried it with my friend’s 5 month old baby, and I have to say it is incredibly comfortable and secure. I was worried at first that the baby could fall out easily, but if you follow the instructions, your baby is absolutely safe. […]
