Why Outdoor Play Boosts your Baby’s and Toddler’s Brain Cells and More….

By |July 5, 2009 |

Have you ever shifted your baby or toddler’s mood simply by getting them outside? Have you ever had a yearning yourself to go for a hike, or to go to the beach?

Of course! We all have, and that is because “there is a universal feeling we get when we put ourselves outside, and into the elements. We feel more open and connected to our world, and our babies feel the same way,” says Kimberley Clayton Blaine, MA, MFT, a Child Development expert, and founder of The-Go-To-Mom.TV, an internet parenting show.

I have personally experienced this change of attitude in myself and in my baby girl, just to get out of the apartment and into the outdoors makes us both happier, more cheerful. The gifts of being in nature: breathing in fresh air and experiencing the vast array of unlimited possibilities that stretch from the grass on the earth, to the expansive vault of the sky.

And if that feeling alone isn’t a big enough incentive to seek the stimulating pleasures of the great outdoors, Kimberley Blaine, the “Go-To-Mom”, mentioned some extraordinary benefits of outdoor play during our interview together, and some pretty creative ways of exploring the outdoors for baby too! […]

This SPF Sun Hat for Kids and Adults Tops The Rest!

By |June 15, 2009 |

This Play Hat from Sunday Afternoons is just about the coolest invention in an SPF hat for children that we’ve seen!

When it comes to sun protection clothing, it is nice to know what to look for.  This Sun Hat carries a 50+ UPF!  If a garment has a UPF factor (Ultra Violet Protection Factor) of 50 attached to it, this means that just 1/50th of the sun’s radiation will reach the skin.

Our children have such delicate skin.  My daughter’s skin is especially sensitive on her scalp, face and around her eyes.  So keeping her head covered while she is playing in the great outdoors is smart and safe.

There are many reasons why this hat is topping the rest…..

Is Crystalline Silica and Asbestos in Play Sand Harmful?

By |May 26, 2009 |

My little girl broke out in hives on 3 different occasions after playing for quite some time in the sandbox of our local park. So, after a little research, I found out that sandbox sand may contain asbestos and other harmful particles.

My research brought up many questions AND concerns, so SafBaby went right to the experts for answers. Today’s expert:

Angkana Roy, MD, (General Academic Pediatrics Fellow, Pediatric Environmental Health Fellow) from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Non-toxic Sand Toys by Green Toys are Eco-Friendly and Fun

By |April 14, 2009 |

Our very popular and informative post titled “How Dangerous Is PVC in Toys? We’ve Got The Answers From THE Expert” clearly lays out the dangers of PVC in our children’s toys.

One of the types of toys out there that is not easy to find as PVC-free has been sand toys.  And since Spring has sprung and Summer time is right around the corner, beach days and countless hours of fun are waiting to be had playing in the sand!

I was immediately impressed by the quality of Green Toys™ Sand Play Set made from 100% recycled milk jugs.  They are sturdy, with a plastic much thicker than my girl’s other sand toys.  These toys are truly made to last!

Green Toys Sand Play set comes with a bucket, a sand castle mold, a shovel and a rake.  All of which are PBA-Free, phthalates free, and free of lead paints too!

A Natural and Effective DEET-Free Bug Spray

By |April 2, 2009 |

If a long winter has kept you indoors, or if a warm-weathered Spring Break is in your future, then you and your family are eager to get into the wild outdoors!  Living here in Hawaii, we are outdoors daily, and so are those darn mosquitoes.

And boy do those pesky biters like new blood!  When we moved here, my daughter was especially tasty to seemingly every mosquito within miles of her 2 year old blood.

The dangers of deet, especially for our babies and children, are highly toxic.  So, I had to find a safer, more natural alternative.

Let me tell you, my whole family was happy when I found Second Skin Naturals™.  My little one was actually in the habit of asking for it whenever she started getting bit too.  (Which was often while we were loading up in the car.)  And daddy’s work out in the banana patches and with other yard work has been more enjoyable too.

What you need to know about deet, especially if you are a parent is this…. […]

Is Your Child Breathing Toxic Air?

By |December 18, 2008 |

USA Today tracked the path of industrial pollution and mapped the locations of almost 128,000 schools to determine the levels of toxic chemicals outside.  Titled: The Smokestack Effect – Toxic Air and America’s Schools, this information regarding air pollution is shocking and a must read!

This site is so easy to use, and the information here is important for all parents to know about for the long-term health of our children. […]

Keeping Outdoor Play Safe for Baby and Child

By |August 26, 2008 |

It is absolutely essential your baby or child is kept safe in the sun, and Sharksuit makes it easy and fun.

Depending on where you live, shopping for sun protective clothing NOW may seem a little late in the season. But, if you time it right, you can actually save serious money on spf clothing that will, FOR SURE, be useful next summer. And the timing is NOW!

The investment of buying ahead isn’t the only saving! I’ve saved so much money on sunblock since we’ve gotten our fun Sharksuits too. And I know you can relate, applying clothing to a toddler is MUCH EASIER than applying sunscreen!!! […]

Nature Play and Outdoor Fun With Simple Activities For Children

By |July 28, 2008 |

I remember how much I enjoyed the outdoors as a child. I climbed trees to pick apples and cherries, tried to catch butterflies, collected different shaped leaves and loved getting dirty in the mud.

My dad and I used to go near the forest, just before dawn, to see the deers come out to feed on grass. We would just sit there quietly and wait. I remember how much I loved those quiet moments observing the animals. It’s something I enjoyed doing with my dad, this was our special time together. Now, it is a fond memory that I cherish for life.

Today, TV, video games and internet seem to be more entertaining and exciting for kids than outdoor play. A lot of kids today suffer from “nature-deficit disorder”. Since kids do what we do, we need to get off the couch and get them excited about the wonders of nature. […]

Safe Gardening With Your Child Is a Gift For Life

By |July 13, 2008 |

It has been such a pleasure having a small garden, to share with my little girl, the gifts of LIFE. She loves picking her own strawberries and delights in all the colors of each flower.

We use organic potting soil, and also purchased organic veggie starts and herbs. I was surprised at how rewarding it can be to have your own, little [tag] organic garden [/tag].

When planting sunflowers with her daddy she giggled about the worm in the dirt. Each day we go out and say, “hello sunflower,” and “good morning flowers,” to her new planted friend. […]
