Restrict/Label Formaldehyde in Textile Products
Safbaby.com is urging legislation to restrict the presence of formaldehyde in textile products. For any clothing articles that do contain formaldehyde, a mandatory label (“contains formaldehyde…”) needs to be available for the consumer to know that the presence of this toxic gas is there.
Formaldehyde is strongly suspected of carcinogenic properties and can provoke allergic reactions like irritation of the eyes, skin and the respiratory system. Furthermore, formaldehyde can cause lung oedema and asthma when it is taken up through the respiratory organs.
It is commonly used in the clothing manufacturing industry as a stain resistant mechanism, to resist mildew, to fix color to a fabric, to give a permanent press effect, to stop shrinking and to make fabric more flame resistant. The application of formaldehyde primarily concerns cotton, viscose, linen and their blends with synthetic fibers.
Japan and European Countries like Austria, Finland, Germany, Norway and Netherlands have laid down national legislation restricting the presence of formaldehyde in textile products. The US needs to get with the times here as well – there are currently NO safety standards in place. This needs to be done for the health and well-being of our children and consumers at large.

Stop the use of toxic PVC in Toys and Packaging
Join SAFbaby.com to ask major toy manufacturers to stop using toxic PVC in toys AND packaging in infant/baby/children toys.
As a large, and rapidly growing, group of concerned parents, we wish to take a stand against PVC in our children’s toys and packaging.
The CPSC regulations have worked to minimize phthalates in our toys, and we are asking toy manufacturers to step to the plate and take this safety issue to the next level. There are many safe alternatives on the market!
PVC is a toxic substance that should not be in our children’s toys and packaging for many reasons:
- PVC creates indoor air pollution with as many as 108 volatile organic chemicals. These chemicals are known to cause developmental damages. Also, exposure to these chemicals may cause damage to the nervous, reproductive and respiratory systems, as well as the liver.
- PVC is harmful for the environment, cannot be recycled, and is recommended to be disposed of in a secure triple-lined hazardous waste landfill.
- PVC packaging, under the right conditions such as heat, may leach directly onto our children’s toys.
Our little ones are extremely vulnerable to all of these harmful toxins. Let’s do what we can to keep them safe. After we gather enough signatures, SAFbaby.com will send the petition to major toy manufacturers.
