The Media Doesn’t Want You To See This!
Consuming Kids is an hour message that is incredibly eye-opening and positively influential! This documentary helps us recognize who we are permitting to teach our children about values, where happiness comes from, and on what truly makes them important and worthy individuals. I use to think that since my child didn’t watch cable television, she was safe from media influence. Boy were my eyes opened. Consuming Kids is a MUST see for ALL parents!
Who is telling you what is appropriate for your children to watch, to consume, and how to behave? Who is telling your kids what holds value? The truth of the matter is that our children become targets to the multi-billion dollar marketing machine trying to sell them things, and instill in their minds what is “cool”, in the very first year of their lives. Our children deserve consideration and respect as miraculous beings. They DON’T deserve to be convinced at a very early age that life is about getting/buying things. They don’t deserve to be a target as a life long consumer!
Consuming Kids took me, and will take you, on a journey into the selfish intentions and huge impact that advertising has on our kids.
Marketers And Their Intentions With Our Kid’s Heads
I did watch this video with my 3 year old girl. She confirmed that marketers do have real influence in their advertising as she “oooh” and “aahed” with comments like “oh, pretty” and “yeah” and we watched the commercial influence that was being dissected by Consuming Kids. It was kind of creepy how she chimed in with her enthusiasm for these advertisements/TV programs/commercials as I was taught about the emotional and long term effects that they have on our children’s development.
Consuming Kids goes much deeper than informing us that TV is negatively impacting our children. They take us a journey as to how marketers are dissecting our children, studying their every moves, with a desire to get into their minds. Their goal = to insinuate their line into the fabric of our children’s lives. The expense of our children’s self-esteem, health and well-being all gets thrown to the waste side for the benefit of money in their pockets.
Marketers have learned the precise configuration of the music, the colors, characters, shapes, etc. that our babies cannot resist. They use this information to engrave their products into their lives through video games, television, cell phones, the internet, AND schools! There is deeply rooted social meaning as to how their products are pushed, and as a parent we need to be aware of all this. We need to be aware of all this, for the benefit of our children, from a very very young age!
Lack Of Media Regulations For Our Children
Deregulation of advertising directed to our kids occurred in the ’80s and since then their influence has skyrocketed into the families of Americans. Alarmingly, we are the ONLY industrialized country in the WORLD that has ZERO regulations on this! Let’s be reminded that there is nothing wrong with having nice things, but please, please, please let our children know that these THINGS are NOT what makes them happy and valuable. If we as parents are not regulating how marketers are tying to get into their heads, then no one else will.
